Avoid single-use tableware.
This is a trap most of us fall into, especially planning get-togethers and parties like the one pictured above. The paper plates, napkins, cups, and silverware can all match and even follow a theme! That is what these paper companies want to impress upon us so we buy it all! Just think of how much money we could save if we didn’t buy into their marketing ploy!
I know it is easier to “just throw things away” and not have to worry about doing dishes. Even at my house, the inhabitants (not me) want to have paper plates as an option to use. It makes me crazy, because we are going to run the dishwasher anyway, so what is one more dish?
If you do choose to use tableware that is disposable, consider buying some that is at least recyclable (it can be rinsed off and recycled.) If you have a compost bin outside that gets warm enough, you could put some types of plates torn up (not the coated kind) in it and even napkins torn up. That is a lot more work, so I recommend just using reusable plates to avoid the whole problem! : )
I purchased some Celebrate plates from a company years ago that I use for special events. They work great for honoring the birthday boy or girl! I have seen special holiday tableware sets that can be used year after year to celebrate recurring holidays.
The next time you are planning an event, consider using reusable tableware. It will save you shopping time and money, and it will save the planet from frivolous waste.
