Stop using styrofoam.
This is one of my biggest pet peeves.
I do not understand why this product is still on the market for businesses to use for packing materials or for food and drink containers. Even though it is a cheaper alternative to other containers and may be a better insulator product for food, it is definitely not better for us or the environment.
Styrofoam is made out of polystyrene, which is a form of plastic. It has benzene and other harmful toxins in it. Those harmful chemicals can leach into your food and drink, especially hot contents. These toxins can cause liver, kidney, and circulatory system problems. (EPA)
Besides being bad for your insides, it is also bad for the environment and the ozone layer. Styrofoam is such a light product, it is easy to disperse and cause land pollution along with the air pollution from the toxins in it.
Because this product is so harmful, some cities are banning its use. As of last year, New York City, Seattle, Miami Beach, San Diego, and Washington D.C. have banned the use. Hopefully, your city will join this movement.
To show your support for this movement, contact your local government and see what is being done on this subject. Also, give feedback to the places that use this product for their food and drink. Send comments online letting them know your feelings about using such a toxic material around food. If they hear it enough, maybe they will switch to something else.
