Get rid of cigarette butts!

Did you know that the number one thing people throw onto the ground as litter are cigarette butts? Approximately 4.5 TRILLION are tossed each year!

In 2017, it was estimated that almost 1.7 BILLION pounds of cigarette butts ended up as toxic waste. (waste360.com)

Obviously, the best solution to this problem would be to quit smoking. However, if you are a smoker, there are a couple things you can do to stop contributing to this toxic waste.

  • Do not throw your cigarette butts out of your car onto the street or land. Besides being a fire hazard when it is dry out, it is littering and is against the law. It is also contributing to the toxic waste problem.
  • Dispose of your cigarette butts in a thick trash bag, so they can not get into the soil.
  • If you are willing, check into the recycling of cigarette butts at Terracycle. It is a Zero Waste Box, so it does cost money, but it is worth it for the peace of mind. Check it out if you have the means to afford it.
