If you use paper towels, use reusable bamboo paper towels.
I am not a fan of all the paper products out there and actively look for ways to avoid them. However, there are just some you can not avoid.
In my daycare, we use washcloths for napkins. We use washable plates and silverware. We use cloth hand towels to dry our hands. We have switched to bamboo toilet paper to be more eco-friendly.
The one thing I have tried and tried to clean up with rags is milk spills. But, whenever I use a washcloth or other washable cloth to clean it up, it leaves a horrible stink behind that radiates into the room. So, I had to use paper towels for these messes. In my opinion, paper towels are an expensive waste of trees.
So, to avoid buying paper towels, I found these bamboo reusable paper towels on the Grove website. There are 20 sheets on the roll and the sheets are whitened by hydrogen peroxide. I was anxious to see if they would work on milk spills.
They worked! They are super-absorbent and also do not leave a stink behind. I can rinse them out and reuse them multiple times for multiple tasks. I have washed my floating floor tile with them. I have cleaned up paint spills with them. Although the paint color still remains in the towel, they still continue to work great!
Once used, I just rinse them out and hang them over the sink to dry and reuse again later.
They recommend using one towel for up to one week with hand washing in between uses. Since I hardly use paper towels anyway, one towel lasts me much longer. Since they are bamboo, they will break down in the landfill.
These towels are amazing. I would recommend trying them out to see how many paper towels you can avoid using and to save lots of money on wasteful paper products. Let me know what you think if you try them out. I am sure there are other brands available, but here is the site where I purchased mine: http://grove.co
