Ditch the plastic wrap!
Plastic wrap is a staple in many homes. I have some in my house as well. When this roll is used up, I will not longer buy it. Unfortunately, the roll I have is a commercial roll I got from an estate sale for a buck, so it will take me awhile to use it all up. The one saving grace is that I can recycle it at our neighborhood Hy-vee™ store or our nearest Target.™ I love that those two companies are stepping up and collecting plastic grocery bags, plastic wrap, and other plastic materials.
Plastic wrap is one of the plastic things I am getting rid of in my home to be plastic-free by the end of 2020. I am a frugal person, so I will not throw away what I already have, but will make the changes once the product is gone. I already have multiple plastic reusable containers I can use to replace the plastic wrap and glass bowls as well. I will eventually phase out the plastic containers to all glass.
A great substitute for plastic wrap is aluminum foil. It is recyclable when rinsed off and works just the same, except it is anyone’s guess what is under it once it covers something. They are priced about the same as well. At least you know it will be recycled, as I am not sure how much all the plastic we recycle is actually recycled anymore. There is just so much of it, and the demand overseas is diminishing quickly, so we have got to start using less and finding replacements for it. I do not think we want this to be a part of our landscape-
So, next time you go to the store to buy plastic wrap, consider purchasing aluminum foil instead or a couple of storage containers. At least they are reusable. Also, check to see if there are stores in your community that recycle the plastic items you do use. More and more stores are stepping up to combat the plastic crisis. Happy swapping!
