Get email receipts or no receipts when possible.
Did you know that receipts are not recyclable? The are not printed with regular ink and instead use chemicals that could release BPA into the air if they were recycled. They are also made with more than one type of paper, like construction paper, so receipts cannot be recycled for this reason as well.
I have only been to a few stores that ask if you want your receipt or an email receipt after they ring up your transaction. I am hoping more stores will start asking and doing their part to keep all the receipts out of the landfills.
My library was the first place I noticed a change. When I was checking my books out on their computer check-out system, it asked if I wanted a receipt of the books I checked out or no receipt. I always choose no receipt because I can check my library account online for what books I have checked out and when they are due.
The same scenario applies for anything I purchase. I balance my checkbook online everyday, so I know how much I purchased and from where. The only time I do get a receipt is if I need a gift receipt or need to keep track of something for taxes.
Next time I am at a store, instead of waiting to be asked, I am going to let them know that I do not need a receipt. At least that might save a little paper.
