Go to the dentist.
I am not a fan of the dentist. Even seeing the picture above sends waves of anxiety through my body. I have already been through many dental procedures in my 49 years, and know there will probably be many more in my future. I just have bad teeth.
My parents were very diligent about taking me to the dentist every six months, which is the recommended schedule for dental checkups. I always got the x-rays and flouride treatments.
Because of this, my parents were on top of getting my braces, retainers, and wisdom teeth done when needed. I did not appreciate it then, but I do now. Hopefully, I will be able to keep all my original teeth.
When I was young, I had those dental visits at the elementary school where you chew the red tablet to see where you missed brushing your teeth. I know they still have visits to elementary schools now that you can opt into for your children if needed. Much to my children’s chagrin, I have continued the tradition of six month visits to the dentist, so I always decline the school visits for my children. Neither of my kiddos like the dentist either, so I try not to put them through any more dental visits than necessary.
Luckily, we have a great dentist. They are always making sure we are comfortable and warm at our visits. We always leave with extra brushes, toothpaste, and lip balm. We are all pleased with this office, and I have referred multiple people to them, which also has gotten us gift cards. My husband even got a gift card because they were running late one day! Now, that is service!
My point is that you should find a dentist you really like. A lot of the daycare kiddos go to dentists that have TV’s they watch while getting their teeth cleaned. They get prizes when they leave or ice cream. They love going! Find a place that is comfortable for all of your family, even if it is a different place for each one of you. I know that may not be the most convenient, but going to the dentist is something you and your kiddos will be doing your whole life, so at least make it as positive an experience as possible. Ask your friends for referrals if you are unsure of where to go or look for reviews online.
Dental care is vital for the health of your body. Not only does dental neglect cause cavities and gum disease, but it can also lead to infections and diseases that affect other parts of your body. Here is a great article about how important dental care is: https://www.absolutedental.com/blog/10-health-issues-caused-by-bad-oral-health/
If it has been more than six months, and certainly if it has been more than a year since your last dental checkup, look into setting up an appointment to get your teeth checked. If you do not have dental insurance, check out this site for free dental care: http://freedentalcare.us
